Bucketlist #57. Watch 50 movies! (21/25)

Standard
This year, I want to watch at least 50 movies that I haven’t seen before. This is part three, movies number  21 – 25. Also check out my 2012 movies nr. 1-5, 6-10, 11-15 and 16-20 for movie ideas!
Please note: The descriptions I used are from the Internet Movie Database.
_____________________________________________________________________________

Film 21 / 50  ’Take me home’  8 June 2012
Comedy / Romance 2011, IMDB Rating: 6.0
Description: In New York City, Thom is broke and jobless, illegally working as a taxi driver just to make some quick cash to try and pay his rent. Claire is a successful business-woman, but personally she’s in shambles trying to recover from a bump in her marriage and then comes the phone call that her distant father is in the hospital. Not knowing what to do, Claire hops in Thom’s cab and orders him to just drive. And so he does. The duo find themselves in Pennsylvania and make the rash decision to drive across the country. On the road to California, there are many detours, as the obstacles and secrets force them to learn about themselves and each other.
My opinion:  I finished watching the whole movie, but it’s not one of world class. It’s not the kind of movie that makes you laugh out loud, makes you cry or touches you. It’s a movie to just watch and don’t think too much. Very predictable.

Film 22 / 50  Loverboy‘  12 June 2012
Drama 2003, IMDB Rating: 6.2
Description: Denise is unsatisfied with her life when she meets the charming Michael. He spoils her with luxuries and romance. Denise falls for him and thinks he’s the perfect guy, until he asks her to sleep with his friend for money.
My opinion:
It’s a Dutch movie, which I always find pretty shitty, but I do like the subject of the movie and I think it’s good people are warned about these things. Not a great movie, but good enough to keep watching.

Film 23 / 50  Intouchables‘ 5 July 2012
Drama / Comedy 2012, IMDB Rating 8.6
Description: A rich quadriplegic, living in a mansion in Paris, requires a live-in carer. A young offender turns up for an interview, but he is not really looking to get the job. However, to his surprise, he is hired. The two men then develop a close friendship.
My opinion: A very well deserved 8.6! One of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time! I laughed my arse off watching this movie, fantastic actors (and the Senegalese dude is not bad looking at for a few hours), very touching story.
If there’s a movie you MUST SEE, it’s gotta be this one!

Film 24 / 50  ’Mirror Mirror‘  30 August 2012
Comedy /Drama / Adventure 2012, IMDB Rating: 5.6

Description: After a beloved King vanishes, his ruthless wife seizes control of the kingdom and keeps her beautiful 18-year-old stepdaughter, Snow White, hidden away in the palace. But when the princess attracts the attention of a charming and wealthy visiting prince, the jealous Queen banishes the girl to a nearby forest. Taken in by a band of rebellious but kindhearted dwarfs, Snow White blossoms into a brave young woman determined to save her country from the Queen. With the support of her new friends, she roars into action to reclaim her birthright and win back her Prince in this magical adventure comedy that will capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences the world over.
My opinion: Wel.. you don’t want to compare this movie to a fantastic movie like Intouchables, but Mirror Mirror is entertaining for a lazy Sunday. (or long planeride..!)  Some funny moments make the movie still nice to watch.

Film 25 / 50Savages’ 20 September 2012
Crime / Drama / Thriller 2012, IMDB Rating 6.8

Description: Entrepreneurs Ben, a peaceful and charitable marijuana producer, and friend Chon, a former Navy SEAL, run a lucrative, homegrown industry – raising some of the best weed ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with Ophelia. Life is idyllic in their Southern California town… until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena and her enforcer, Lado, underestimate the unbreakable bond of the three friends, Ben and Chon – with the reluctant assistance of a dirty DEA agent – wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.
My opinion:  Pretty good movie. The movie has funny bits (and horrifying ones!) and the story is quite entertaining. The only thing is, it’s such a loooong movie! I think they could’ve cut quite a few parts of the film, this way you kind of lose focuss. But on the other hand.. 2,5 hours of looking at Aaron Taylor-Johnson is not all that bad 😀

So alright, here it goes, some randoms facts about me:
– I’m the sort of girl others my boyfriend might refer to as crazy catwoman. He’s my baby!
– I’m scared of flying. As soon as the plane starts moving I’m straight up in my chair, the sweat breaks out, I’m squeezing the armwrests or the person next to me, whether it’s someone I know or not and I’m swearing I never fly again if the plane would land safely.
– I’m a crybaby. I cry during movies (Titanic, 50/50, Finding Nemo), when I see older people walking hand in hand or for any other reason.
– I used to love playing ‘house‘ as a child. When my three year older cousin told me she didn’t want to play anymore, I swore to myself I would always keep loving to play house. My dolls made place for my cat.

–  My brother thinks he’s black.
–  I love lists, making lists of lists and being proud of myself to cross things off the lists. First thing I always put on my list is; make a list. I cross it, and prospone the rest because I already did something that day.
– I like babysitting or teaching children because I can act extremely childish and blame the child.
– I have a fantastic idea that’s gonna make me rich.
– I like dinonaurs, a lot. I drive my boyfriend crazy sometimes with requests to watch dinosaur documentaries or going to a museum where they show them. Dinosaurs just rock.

Thanks everyone for reading my blogs!

Martin Schoeller is a German photographer living in New York. His work is phenonomous, his portaits brilliant. These photo’s of celebrities are funny and original, taking the piss a little bit. I think it’s great that these celebrities also show a bit of humor and not taking themselves so seriously for once.

Must-see! I came across a youtube video from Dutch filmmaker Frans Hofmeester. He filmed his now twelve year old daughter every week from birth. He made this time lapse from the many videos he has.

I love the idea, you can see the little girl grow up in 2.45 minutes. Amazing to have of your children!

Lots of love,smiles and happiness,

Film 16 / 50  ’Maria Full of Grace’  21 February 2012
Drama / Thriller 2004, IMDB Rating: 7.6

Description: In a small village in Colombia, the pregnant seventeen years old Maria supports her family with her salary working in a floriculture. She is fired and with a total lack of perspective of finding a new job, she decides to accept the offer to work as a drug mule, flying to USA with sixty-two pellets of cocaine in her stomach. Once in New York, things do not happen as planned.
My opinion:  First of all I was very impressed with the size of the pellets of cocaine she had to take! As well as the amount. A whole new world where I knew nothing about. Very impressive story. Unbelievable and sad that these things actually happen.

Film 17 / 50  Machine Gun Preacher‘  6 March 2012
Drama / Crime / Biography 2011, IMDB Rating: 6.8.

Description: The story of Sam Childers, a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who’ve been forced to become soldiers.
My opinion: Amazing movie, an inspiring biography.  Fantastic that he gave up so much to help these children in such a dangerous country.

Film 18 / 50The Machinist‘ 26 March 2012
Drama / Thriller 2004, IMDB Rating 7.8

Description: Trevor Reznik is a lathe-operator who suffers from insomnia and hasn’t slept in a year. Slowly, he begins to doubt his sanity as increasingly bizarre things start happening at work and at home. Haunted by a deformed co-worker who no one seems to think exists, and an ongoing stream of indecipherable Post-It notes he keeps finding on his fridge, he attempts to investigate what appears to be a mysterious plot against him and, in the process, embroils two women in his madness.
My opinion: Scary movie, not because there’s a lot happening, but because the not-knowing what’s going on. The main character is incredibly skinny and hasn’t slept in over a year. He changes his moods all the time and as a viewer (and the main character himself) gets more and more clues what’s going on. Brilliant film.

Film 19 / 50  ’Get the Gringo‘  13 May 2012
Drama / Action 2012, IMDB Rating: 8.2

Description: A career criminal (Gibson) nabbed by Mexican authorities is placed in a tough prison where he learns to survive with the help of a 9-year-old boy.
My opinion: Great movie, a well deserved 8.2 at IMDB! Fantastic acting of Mel Gibson. The movie has just the right amount of action, drama and humor and is refreshing and entertaining. Definitely a must-see!

Drama 2008, IMDB Rating 7.5
Description: An aerospace engineer with a fateful secret embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.
My opinion:  Fantastic Movie! Must see! Nothing to add to that. Just watch it :)

______________________________________________________________________
Film 11 / 50  ’Drive‘  6 February 2012
Drama / Thriller / Crime 2011, IMDB Rating: 8.0
Description: A mysterious man who has multiple jobs as a garage mechanic, a Hollywood stuntman and a getaway driver seems to be trying to escape his shady past as he falls for his neighbor – whose husband is in prison and who’s looking after her child alone. Meanwhile, his garage mechanic boss is trying to set up a race team using gangland money, which implicates our driver as he is to be used as the race team’s main driver. Our hero gets more than he bargained for when he meets the man who is married to the woman he loves.
My opinion: This movie is supposed to be awesome, if I may believe IMDB ratings. After seeing the film I have to say I disagree. The movie starts with the main character as a get away driver. Later you find out he’s a stuntman as well as a mechanic, he obviously loves to drive and fix cars. Within no time he’s with his neighbour. Where this romance comes from is not quite obvious to me, because right after the first scene (of her inviting him in for a drink and him saying nothing) they are together holding hands (yes indeed) in his car. And then it gets bloody, people get brutally killed and our stuntman / get away driver / mechanic also turns out to be an excellent shutter. The movie didn’t intrest me at all, but just gave me a scare at moments where a head is exploding out of nowhere. But anyway, I think this would be a good movie for people guys  who love driving and lots of blood!

Film 12 / 50  ’Puss in Boots‘  18 February 2012
Animation / Adventure / Comedy 2011, IMDB Rating: 6.8

Description: Years before meeting Shrek and Donkey, the adorable but tricky Puss in Boots must clear his name from all charges making him a wanted fugitive. While trying to steal magic beans from the infamous criminals Jack and Jill, the hero crosses paths with his female match, Kitty Softpaws, who leads Puss to his old friend, but now enemy, Humpty Dumpty. Memories of friendship and betrayal enlarges Puss’ doubt, but he eventually agrees to help the egg get the magic beans. Together, the three plan to steal the beans, get to the Giant’s castle, nab the golden goose, and clear Puss’ name
My Opinion: Not the best animation I’ve ever seen, but definitely entertaining.

______________________________________________________________________
Film 13 / 50  ’The Way‘  17 February 2012
Drama / Adventure / Comedy 2010, IMDB Rating: 7.2
Description: ”The Way” is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world.  Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son, killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn’t plan on is the profound impact the journey will have on him and his “California Bubble Life”. Inexperienced as a trekker, Tom soon discovers that he will not be alone on this journey. On his journey, Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, each with their own issues and looking for greater meaning in their lives.
My opinion: Good movie! Despite the fact that they’re pretty much walking the entire movie, they’ve made the characters next to Martin Sheen pretty funny and interesting which makes the movie entertaining. Still I find the movie occasionally typical American ‘over the top’, Spanish cops arresting the maincharacter right away after him falling down drunk in a cafe and kicking the others down the stairs.. Religion plays a big part in this movie as well, it keeps coming back in the movie, which I find a bit annoying. A bit less wouldn’t have hurt. The footage is amazing, they make you want to walk this route, even when you don’t like walking at all. Good movie, never a dull moment.

Film 14 / 50  ’Tower Heist‘  17 February 2012
Action / Crime / Comedy 2011, IMDB Rating: 6.4
Description: Josh Kovacs is the manager of a residential apartment in New York. He is close to all the tenants, especially Arthur Shaw, a financier. One day Shaw is arrested by the FBI for fraud. Josh thinks it’s a misunderstanding that can be resolved. But later he learns that the employees’ pension which he asked Shaw to handle is gone. When one of the employees tries to kill himself, Josh’s views of Shaw change. He goes to see him and loses his temper. He loses his job. The FBI agent in charge of Shaw tells him that Shaw might walk and recovering the pension fund is unlikely. She tells him that it’s been rumored that Shaw has 20 million laying around if he needs. Josh thinks he knows where it is. So with two other employees who also lost their jobs and an evicted tenant, they set out to get into Shaw’s penthouse to get the money. But they realise they need the assistance of someone who knows what they are doing..
My opinion: The first half an hour of the movie was kind of boring. It gets interesting at the moment they actually start making a plan to steal the money. Eddie Murphy makes this movie interesting and funny to watch. There’s a few suprises in the movie, which makes you keep watching. I enjoyed it, although I thought it would’ve been better. Quite an entertaining movie, wouldn’t win the comedy of the year award.

Film 15 / 50  ‘Law Abiding Citizen’  26 February 2012
Drama / Thriller / Crime 2009, IMDB rating: 7.2

Description:
A frustrated man decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain sets one of his family’s killers free. He targets not only the killer but also the district attorney and others involved in the deal.
My opinion: Awesome movie! I like crime / thrillers and this definitely was a good one.  Was a bit dissapointed with the ending, would’ve liked to see it a bit differently. Why? Watch the movie first! :)

Film 6 / 50 ‘Martha Macy May Marlene‘ 9 January 2012
Drama / Thriller 2011, IMDB rating: 7.3

Description: Haunted by painful memories and increasing paranoia, a damaged woman struggles to re-assimilate with her family after fleeing an abusive cult.
My Opinion: Good movie! I liked the fact that you see the flashbacks about her life in the cult, which made it very thrilling. I wanted to know where her strange behaviour came from, and by getting small pieces of information at the time, it made me want to keep watching it. I just didn’t like the sudden end of the movie, to me it felt like the story hadn’t ended yet.

Film 7 / 50 ‘Catfish 11 January 2012
Documentary / Drama 2010, IMDB Rating: 7.1

Description: In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives.
My Opinion: Number one Sundance Movie 2010. Fantastic documentary that shows how you can be lied to over the internet. Nothing is what it seems. The whole documentary is really the way it went. The whole time you’re wondering what’s real and what’s not. And still you’ll be suprised.

Film 8 / 50 ‘We need to talk about Kevin  12 January 2012
Drama / Thriller 2011, IMDB Rating: 7.7

Description:Kevin’s mother struggles to love her strange child, despite the increasingly vicious things he says and does as he grows up. But Kevin is just getting started, and his final act will be beyond anything anyone imagined.
My Opinion: Pff.. What a drama. I felt a bit weird after watching this movie. No feel good movie for sure, but still impressive. Don’t watch it if you don’t want to be in a bad mood afterwards 😛

Film 9 / 50 ‘50/50. 29 January 2012
Drama / Comedy 2011, IMDB Rating: 8.0

Description: Must see film! This movie is about Adam, a 27 year old writer of radioshows, who’s diagnosed with spinal cancer. The people around him find it difficult to cope with his disease, while Adam stays abnormally calm. Supported by his best friend and young, unexperienced therapist he starts to fight the cancer.
My Opinion:
What a beautiful film! The story of a cancerpatient is told with a smile and a tear. Very pure and realistic. I liked how they also showed the different reactions of the people that care for him, one is even more hysteric than he is, another avoids him and another one tries to help him as much a possible. MUST SEE!

______________________________________________________________________

Film 10 / 50 ‘The Help‘ 3 February 2012
Drama 2011, IMDB Rating 8.0

Description: An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maid’s point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.
My Opinion: I find it difficult to give my opinion about this movie. After hearing loads of good things about this movie and many people suggesting it, I watched it. In two parts. The story is beautiful and I think it’s good that people are reminded of the horrible time that rascisme was a normal part of our society, not even fifty years ago. And how important it is to never let that happen again. And after all of the positive reviews I’m a bit scared to say it with the consequence of people finding me weird, but.. I thought the movie was rather, eh, boring. I’ve seen movies with a similar message that were a lot more interesting. So, my opinion, good movie, but not a must-see.

The story of a sign

Standard
The story of a sign

The story about a homeless blind man who’s helped by a stranger in an extraordinairy way. I found this short film (Wama Films) on youtube and I had to share it with people. It’s the winner of Cannes filmfestival 2008. The producer, Alonso Alvarez Barreda, is in my eyes brilliant. Very touching and beautiful. Amazing short film.
